April 10, 1985: Jobs Sculley Versus Steve Jobs: It’s Either Him or Me!
With the current success of Apple it is hard to imagine Steve Jobs as anything but an asset. That wasn't always the case. While Steve did oversee the creation of the Mac he also guided the creation of the execrable Apple ///.
More damaging than his miscues in product development was his management style, a style that caused one Apple exec to remark: "Steve Jobs and management is an oxymoron." Steve had a reputation for overstepping his authority and mucking about in areas that were not his purview. Then Apple President Sculley later summed the situation up thusly:
"I had given Steve greater power than he had ever had and I had created a monster."
Since you don't want a monster roaming the halls of your corporate offices, Sculley decided Steve had to go. During a Board of Directors meeting Sculley asked that Steve be stripped of his primary roles at Apple, even going so far as to threaten to leave if his wishes weren't accommodated. The board agreed and granted Sculley the power to remove Jobs. The meeting that was the beginning of the end of Steve's initial run at Apple took place on April 10, 1985.

The other insider joke that was making the rounds at that time:
“What’s the difference between Apple and the Boy Scouts… One of them has adult leadership!”
The second best thing that happened to Apple was when Steve Jobs left!
The best thing was when he came back!
