Anyone Else Smell “Surprise?”
Apple has sent out invites to media outlets inviting them to a special event on February 28. Assuming they aren’t announcing that they have finally shipped my MacBook Pro chances are it will be something unexpected. See the invitation indicates that Apple will be introducing some “fun new products.” What’s a fun new product? isilly putty? isix pack? The hint boggles the mind. Sure it could be something as mundane as a MacBook replacement for the white and shiny iBook but there’s that “fun” thing throwing a wrench in the works. Until Tuesday one supposes it is all speculation, or the kind of fun and games we’ve grown accustomed to as Apple watchers. For the record (and I’ll be keeping records this year) this is special media event #1 of 2006.

OK, everyone thinks it’s a sure thing that the iBook will be renamed the “MacBook.” But just for the record, I wanted to point out I, personally (and it does actually seem to be just me) think it will be named, <b>iMacBook</i>
So, even if this event is just to release the new iBook name, whatever it will be, I’ll just be happpy to be able to finally get some sleep again.

If they continue the trend of renaming ‘i’ to ‘Mac’, does that make the iMac the ‘MacMac’?
They could get into the trend of calling their products the same thing in a sentence.

My guesses in order of likelihood:
- Mac mini
- iPod video
- MacBook
- Some new application
- A full on, iTunes Video Store

I don’t understand how that works. What have they taken the ‘i’ from? There was never an ‘i’ in ‘PowerBook.’ They’re just renaming the ‘power’:
PowerBook = MacBook
PowerMac = Mac…Mac
....um… I’ll…. um…
It mostly comes from everyone predicting the iBook is going to be renamed the “MacBook”, though you make a thoroughly awesome point. I hope they stick with “i”, personally.
iBook = MacBook
PowerBook = MacBook Pro
PowerMac = MacPro
iMac = iMac (the consumer all-in-one has too much unique social identity to be changed)
iMacPro = an dual Intel Core Duo (effectively a quad) with upgraded memory and (replaceable) video graphics card, all contained in a newly redesigned all-in-one form. Apple has found that prosumers replace the whole computer faster than they replace the graphics cards. This all-in-one while not as versatile in monitor and PCI slots, does offer an unbeatable price-to-quality value, especially for the entry level pro.
...but, I have digressed. The clue here is “fun”. To guess what it may be, I’d try to image what Steve Jobs would find fun. Hmmm….
...wandering about a bit further has taken me into an all new fun area within Apple.com. Perhaps, this is the clue we seek…?
